Robert “Bob” Nichol ’68 died on December 9, 2017. Bob earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Alma, where he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.
"Shelley Nichol called me yesterday with the bad news I'd been fearing for several years. Bob has finally lost his valiant fight and passed away. Shelley said that he went very peacefully and without pain - and wasn't even aware that the end was near.
This is extremely sad - and he will be sorely missed.
However, after visiting him a few times over the last couple of years....it was becoming clear that his health had started to irreversibly decline (and in fact they had just discovered a brain tumor after a recent seizure), and along with that his quality of life. Bob was too much of a fun-loving guy to suffer such a fate, and he is now in a better place.
Nic was a great guy, a great friend and a great American hero - as well as one of my personal heroes, as I had told him many times.
Shelley has advised me that his ashes will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in the spring. With two Purple Hearts, a Silver Star medal and two Bronze Stars, this is most fitting.
As Bob was aware a Hero Scholarship was set up in his name a couple of years ago at Alma College, as well as having the entire 2nd floor residential suite in the new TKE house being named after him. Bob loved his fraternity to the end."
(Forever Yours in the Bond, brother.)
